Wally's

The story of Wally’s begins with Ignatz Salamon born in 1898 who originally owned a small general store in the village of Rohrbach, near Vienna, Austria.

1939

As the Nazis were advancing through Europe in 1939, Ignatz moved to the UK with his wife and three children, one of whom was the famous Wally who then went on to open ‘Wally’s’.

1947 - 1981  Ignatz's store

In 1947 Ignatz opened a delicatessen, at 12 Bridge Street, where the John Lewis store now stands. Ignatz's store specialised in European delicacies which were unknown to the people of Cardiff before his arrival. Many of the newly arrived immigrants from Eastern Europe frequented Ignatz's shop and there was a constant hub of activity. Wally and his brother Otto joined their father in the family business and worked there until Ignatz died in 1963. The shop which had become known as the Continental Delicatessen was run by the brothers until 1981 when it was compulsorily purchased by Cardiff City Council. The Salamon brothers then went their separate ways, both opening delicatessens of their own, Wally in the Royal Arcade and Otto in Caroline Street.

1993  Wally and Steven Salamon

Wally Salamon named his shop Wally's Delicatessen and specialised in health foods and continental meats. Wally's son, Steven, joined the business in 1993 after qualifying as a chartered accountant and working in Cardiff for a short while. Steven became the owner of Wally's delicatessen in 1995 and worked with his father until Wally's death in 2008.
